Once referred to as the Hinge & Bracket of western swing,
North West band The Winchesters release this their second
album. Though the visual effect is paramount to the bands
performance, Space Station Party gives a taste of what to
expect from this zany five-piece. 13 tracks all written
by the band, who say that it contains solos that are as
scorching as the Sun and a sound as big as Jupiter. Anyone
who has seen this crazy set-up live, will eagerly agree
that Space Station Party is the tops, as this atmospheric
mix transports with delight to the dizzy heights of merriment
and pleasure.
All quality musicians, Peter O'Reilly takes the lead vocals
with backup from the rest of his collaborators, Jessie Winter,
Arthur Sturgeon, Horace Dogson and Yellin' Yeti. This rickety
carnival ride puts us in the party mood saying that, '(It
Depends) Who I'm With', before heading off for the Space
Station Party. A change of mood sees our grave-digging hero
hearing ghostly whispers of 'I've Got My Eye On You' making
the hairs stand-up on the back of your neck.
The moody blues of 'Falling' is almost a love potion, with
that heart warming sensual innocence of youth dreaming of
an imaginary new love. The one instrumental 'Horace of Arabia'
has that jaunty tone of an ungainly cartoon-like camel lumbering
lazily across the open desert.
You can take a trip to the heart of Lancashire's 'Bolton
Town', or even find the secret of how to grind those 'Coffee
Beans'. The dangers of a naive young man's fancy being drawn
towards the charms of a porcelain-skinned beauty, finds
that he is soon relieved from his 'Dark Brown Wallet' (made
of imitation leather). The modern day scourge of the 'Mobile
Phone' soon has us running for a phone-free haven.
Always sure to please, this riotous collection is a musical
hybrid and a sure winner. Check it out at The Winchesters
gigs.
