British country band Western Union have gained great strides
on the local country music scene over the past couple of years or so
with their finely selected repertoire. Jim Hulmes takes lead vocals
and rhythm guitar. The remaining four members of Western Union
include Tony (TC) Carter - lead guitar, Bernie Fullalove - bass, Ron
Ronson - slide-steel-rhythm-lead guitars and Mike Martin -
percussion.
Quite Storm is the band's debut
album containing 12 numbers, 6 of which are written by the band
themselves. "New Western Blues"
written by Ronson/Fullalove opens with a swing style, while the
title track (Hulmes) has east coast Florida feel about somewhat in
the style Jimmy Buffett made popular in the 1970's. Hulmes' "Nothin'
Could Have Prepared Me For You" adds sparkle with a
driving rhythm and the lilting "Full
Grown Man" has Jim singing from his country soul.
Several well-chosen covers include Rodney Crowell's "Lovin'
You Makes Me A Better Man" and Brad Paisley's "Who
Needs Pictures" which Jim Humes brings into sharp focus.
The deep richly textured vocals of lead singer Jim Hulmes who has a
standing in R&B and blues music, comes across on several tracks
such as "Queen Of Memphis",
Joe South's "Down On The Boondocks"
and band member Bernie Fullalove's "Backtrackin".
Quiet Strom is an album that
shows the musical talents of a group of musicians who really know
one another. Additional musicians include Les (Dransfield) Walker -
harmonica, Andy Keith - fiddle and Steve Johnson - banjo. When Jim
Humes sings….you listen hard!!!
