Let's Put the Western Back in the Country

Wildcatter Records

Being brought up on a working ranch that was homesteaded by her great, great grandfather in 1870, Oregon based Joni Harms lives the western life raising quarter horses and Christmas Trees.

A major contributor to keeping western music alive, Joni Harms has numerous awards to her credit including the Academy of Western Artists, Will Rogers Awards for Female Western Artist and CD coverEntertainer of The Year. In July 2004 I attended the Will Rogers Awards to see an absolutely thrilled Joni Harms take the Western Album Of The Year Award for 'Let's Put the Western Back in the Country' released in 2003.

Harms released her first album on the Capitol label in the early 1990's. Her celebrated Cowgirl Dreams album came in 1999 on Warner Western followed by After All in 2001 on the Real West label. A new label…Wildcatter Records, are part of the Wildcatter Ranch & Resort situated near Possum Kingdom Lake, along the Brazos River, in the Palo Pinto Hill Country, North Texas. Joni Harms is their initial recording artist, and Let's Put the Western Back in the Country makes a striking debut release for the label with 13 tracks all co-written by Harms.

Joni Harms' distinctive sincere vocals instantly invite the listener to sit back and enjoy over forty-two and half minutes of top quality music in the western style. Cowboy songs or western swing, Joni Joni Harms on stage at the AWA convention 2004Harms can nail it. The opening title track sets the tone with its stinging message of the way modern country music has unashamedly turned it back on a style of music that was a major building block in the foundation of the country music genre. A taste of western swing launches "I've Got A Feeling For You", setting the feet tapping with a nice jaunty melody. A touching story song comes with the gentle "Coyote Café", noodling its way into your mind with the tale of a young girl, a boy she falls in love with and the tragedy of her father's wrath. A catchy number comes with "Cowboy Up" that has also been recorded by another saviour of western music Chris LeDoux.

A nicely laid out cover booklet completes the album with some nice colour photos of Joni Harms with her horses on the ranch and several sepia photos which I presume are of Joni's own children and her Mom and Dad, and of course the words of each song on the album. The musicianship couldn't be better as we find legendary musicians Brent Mason, Larry Franklin, Matt Rollings and Eddie Bayers helping out. A top quality album from one of western music's finest artists, so "Let's Put the Western Back in the Country" and with your support that will be easily achieved!!!
