Cork based Kevin & Geraldine Gill have been involved
in playing Bluegrass music for the past 20 years. Meeting at a
Doc Watson concert in Dublin in 1984, they went on to front The
Rusty String Band and were founder members of The Last Chance
Bluegrass Band, they also play with the band Grass Roots. Kevin
and Geraldine have performed at many major festivals in Ireland
and supported such prominent acts as Bala Fleck & Jerry
Douglas, The Seldom Scene, High Country and Bob Paisley. At
present Kevin is also the dobro player with The Lee Valley
String Band and recently they performed with their two sons Cian
and Donal as The Gill Family Band.
Kevin presents a regular radio show Bluegrass And Beyond
each Monday on CUHFM and is webmaster
for the Bluegrass In Ireland website www.bluegrassireland.com
The Gill's debut CD So Many Times,
features 13 tracks with a mix of traditional bluegrass numbers.
Included are four covers of the likes of the popular Louise
Certain & Gladys Stacey composition "Some
Old Days" and a slower version of the Louvin
Brothers hit "My Babies Gone"
written by Hazel Houser, plus a fine selection of nine numbers
written by themselves. The title track "So
Many Times" was the first songs that Kevin &
Geraldine wrote together. Kevin has written the lyrics and
Geraldine contributes the music for three of the numbers on the
album, plus there are three more songs written by Kevin and
three of his own instrumentals.
Kevin plays five-string banjo, dobro and mandolin and
takes the lead vocals on "Self
Destruct" and "Turn Of A
Coin", while Geraldine plays flat picking guitar and
bass and takes-up lead vocals on the remaining songs with Kevin
neatly harmonising alongside. Geraldine's engaging vocals ring
out clear and pure as she steers us through a sensitive path of
heartfelt emotions, with well-scripted lyrics and sweet melodies
that will last a lifetime. Kevin and Geraldine Gill have a very
worthy debut album with So Many Times,
including a first-class selection of songs and instrumentation
of the highest quality.
