Cowboy singer and poet Butch Martin drew four Grammy
Nominations for his previous album Whittlers Corner. Living in
Wyoming some years ago Martin bred Morgan cow horses on his small
ranch. Leaving all that behind him Morgan now resides in Oregon
where he concentrates more on his music and poetry, travelling
around the West to perform and often referred to as the 'Drifter
Poet'.
Come Ride The Wagon offers
11 tracks that take you on a journey back to the days of the
western pioneers and cowboy way of life, bringing the smell
of the sagebrush and mesquite wood smoke right into your own
living room. The opening track "Mojave"
tells of the teamsters who handled and drove their teams of
mules that pulled those heavy wagons across the prairies and
has now evolved into the truck drivers of today. "Goodbye
to Montana" appears as a song that depicts a cowboy
taking his friend home after a cattle drive that has seen the
tragic demise of his fiend. The cowboy is returning home with
his friend to lay him below the Pecan tree where the Indian
Paint Brush flowers bloom. With the effective use of a driving
banjo, Butch gives a fine version of Jimmie Driftwood's classic
"Tennessee Stud". We
can drift high above the clouds with
"Cheyenne Wind" offering
a stirring tribute to the American Native Indian.
Butch has that easy kind of voice that draws you in close
with his effortless relaxing style as he sings about the "Colorado
Trail", a "Song of Wyoming"
or the long abandoned adobe built "Little Bear Station"
that nobody cares about anymore. This stunning collection comes to
a close with a wonderful song from Red Steagall "The
Wagon Tongue", about a youth starting his life out on
the trail as coosie's (a shortened version of the Spanish term for
cook which is cocinero) assistant. Youth is also remembered with
those golden years gone by and "Penny
Ante Memories" complete with a haunting harmonica that
give the back of the neck that "prickle sensation" that
comes with our own memories of years now long gone.
Come Ride The Wagon yourself!!!
You won't be disappointed with this collection of poignant songs;
sweet melodies and fine vocals that are destined to last a
lifetime.
