Chuck Pyle

Affected By The Moon

Bee 'n' Flower Music (no number)

From the very outset of the rhythmic title cut "Affected By The Moon", Chuck Pyle grabs you by the ear and doesn't let go. A pure feral album, Pyle's vocals and finger picking guitar playing is complimented by a handful of quality musicians including Christian Teele on drums/percussion, Doug Haywood - bass and electric guitar, Gordon Burt - fiddle, Dr Daniel Jones - steel guitar and Dobro, Pete Wasner - keyboards and Larry Knight - electric guitar with Doug and Aaron Haywood helping out on harmony vocals.

This is Pyle's seventh CD release and certainly gets my vote with 9 richly textured tracks written or co-written by Pyle, 3 covers that include "Blue Train" from the pen of Tom Kimmel & Jennifer Kimball and finally the fine acoustic instrumental "Spank" offering 13 tracks in all. The easy relaxed vocals of Chuck Pyle pour out of your stereo with tantalizing delicacies of the likes of the romantically entwined "If Not Now" and singing over a sparse guitar backing, a touch of romanticism of the old west with "Outlaw's Dream". The bluesy mid-tempoed "Think I'll Go To Texas" has been released to radio via Stuart Cameron's Country HotDisc in January 2003 and "Why Pretend" is another pleasing mid-tempoed track that plays with your senses, drawing you further into a dreamy state of mind.

Affected By The Moon is a well-crafted and heady album delivering a selection of carefully chosen gems that I feel ideal for those late night intimate moments, sharing a glass of something stimulating with the one you hold dear in your life.
